City of Hope: The Future Is Now

Two tents in the desert – that’s how City of Hope began 100 years ago. Today, the former tuberculosis sanatorium on the outskirts of Los Angeles is an independent biomedical, treatment and education center of world renown, home to groundbreaking research and revolutionary patient care.

And its work is just beginning.

Scientists at City of Hope’s Beckman Research Institute, long a leader in biomedical research, transform groundbreaking discoveries into real-world care. Work by its researchers led to the first synthetic human insulin and human growth hormone, helping launch the biotech industry; other efforts made possible the widely used cancer drugs Herceptin, Rituxan and Avastin.

City of Hope’s strategic research programs encompass immunology, stem cell and developmental biology, developmental therapeutics, cancer biology, population sciences, and diabetes. The Center for Biomedicine and Genetics furthers the research work, creating new genetic and cellular therapies for use in clinical trials — and enabling lifesaving drugs to quickly reach the marketplace and the patients who need them.

Beckman researchers explore how biology affects not just cancer, but also HIV/AIDS and diabetes. The center’s work in recombinant DNA technology, gene therapy and monoclonal antibodies have advanced their fields, leading to breakthroughs affecting people worldwide. Here, scientific discoveries can, and do, become real-world care.

Even now, City of Hope scientists are investigating the underpinnings of tumor cell, radiation, molecular and developmental biology; tumor immunology and immunotherapeutics; molecular therapeutics; neuromorphology; viral immunology; and more. At the same time, its researchers are collaborating with institutions around the world, conducting both targeted cellular research as well as analyses of population genetics.

Recognized by the National Cancer Institute for its cancer treatment, research, prevention and education, City of Hope is one of 41 comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. Further, as a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, it helps define and set standards for cancer care nationally.

A pioneer in bone marrow transplantation, City of Hope operates one of the largest, most successful programs of this type in the world. It’s also a leader in the treatment of breast and urologic cancers, known for its success in robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostate surgeries.

City of Hope, home to more clinical trials than most other cancer centers, is committed to translational research – with a mission to shorten the time from early research to groundbreaking treatment. At City of Hope, innovative concepts are transformed into powerful new treatments.

Beyond breakthrough discoveries, the former refuge for tuberculosis patients – many unable to afford care on their own — is built on another principle as well: compassionate care. The once-revolutionary concept of involving parents in children’s care was launched at City of Hope, the same institution that created a small village for families of patients traveling from afar. Such a holistic, whole-person approach to care proved groundbreaking, and City of Hope is now training health professionals around the globe on the compassionate-care model.

City of Hope’s commitment to transform the future of health is bolstered by our past success in doing just that.

Recognizing that discovery is linked to better treatments and even cures, the institution’s early leaders made the strategic decision to fund science as a means of improving care.

The researchers, physicians, nurses, educators, and staff at City of Hope have made hope a reality for thousands of patients and families, and on its centennial comes the opportunity to reflect on that 100-year commitment to care and discovery – and to look toward the future.
